First launched in Japan in April 2024 and now available in Singapore and Malaysia, the Sukusuku GL is the latest evolution of yamatoya’s long-selling high chair series.
To mark this model update, we spoke with our Japanese product development team about the heart, vision, and subtle design improvements that went into creating the Sukusuku GL.
Becoming a Global Standard
Q: What led to this new model update?
The Sukusuku series first debuted in 2000 and recently surpassed 1 million units sold worldwide. It truly is yamatoya’s signature high chair, having provided comfortable seating for over a million children across Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and beyond.
Through its 24-year history, the series has undergone eight updates. For this 9th evolution, our starting point was to honor the core Sukusuku concept while updating it to match modern parenting lifestyles.
We also wanted to fulfill our vision of sharing Sukusuku with even more families globally. By meeting global safety standards—including Europe’s strict EN standards alongside Japan’s SG standards—the Sukusuku GL was born as a true global-standard high chair.
Enhanced Safety & Modern Guard Design
Q: What are the main changes from the previous model?
The most noticeable update is the protective guard and belt system.
Instead of the previous wooden T-guard, the Sukusuku GL features a wide, wrap-around guard paired with a stylish grey safety belt. This refined structure complements any chair color while ensuring top-tier safety that meets international standards.

Thoughtful Details for Everyday Convenience
Q: Were there other subtle design updates?
Yes! We made several fine-tuned improvements for stability and daily practicality:
- - Robot-Vacuum Friendly: We raised the lower crossbar slightly so most standard robot vacuums can easily clean underneath.

- - Extra Stability: Thicker leg frames and a higher crossbar provide an even steadier foundation.
- - Easier Table Lock: The "Easy Lock" knob is now larger and ergonomically shaped, making it smoother to fasten or unfasten.

-
- Enhanced Comfort: We expanded the footrest area, widened its adjustment range, and redesigned the seat shape for maximum comfort as your child grows.
Nature-Inspired Colors & Upgraded Accessories
Q: Tell us about the new color palette and options!
While we continue to use eco-friendly, certified recycled rubberwood from Indonesia, we refreshed the color palette entirely. Inspired by natural plant dyes, the new range includes 6 soft, modern shades—from classic Natural and Brown to subtle Grey, Blue Wash, and White Wash. They blend seamlessly into modern home interiors.

We also updated our favorite optional accessories:
- - Separate Seat Cushion: Designed by French textile designer Véronique Petit in exclusive yamatoya colorways. Made from water-repellent cotton, the new 2-piece separate design (backrest and seat) makes cleaning a breeze!

- - Upgraded Silicone Table Cover: Now features a secure bottom strap, allowing you to swing the table back without removing the cover.

Preserving the "Sukusuku Identity"
Q: Looking back on over a year of development, how do you feel?
Over the course of a year, we built full-scale prototypes, conducted rigorous safety tests, and constantly asked ourselves: "What truly defines the Sukusuku chair?"
Upgrading the chair while preserving the iconic "Sukusuku identity" that parents have loved for 24 years was both our biggest challenge and most rewarding experience.
A chair is fundamentally a chair—its shape may not change drastically, but it can evolve with the times. The Sukusuku GL was built with deep care and passion to make mealtimes easier, safer, and more enjoyable for families everywhere. We hope it brings warmth and wonderful memories to your dining table!
